Guys I'm new to the activity of hiking trails, and started to search on Internet infos related. I'm from Brazil, but living in Texas. I already have some informations about the best hiking trails near me, but I saw an article about Things To Know Before Embarking on a Hiking Adventure, that mentioned about Switchback, but could not figure out yet the exactly meaning of it, does anyone here use it to hike?

A switchback is a type of trail that cuts back and forth on itself. Switchbacks may also be called hairpin turns. They resemble zigzags on a map and are used to ascend, or descend, very steep terrain. Trying to go straight up a steep slope would not only be overly tiring but would also cause lots of erosion.
