Just a reminder for anyone thinking of making a trip to Big Bend or Guadalupe Mountains National Parks. Don't. They're closed for business pending the political wranglings going on in Congress. Heck, even the NPS website is partially shut down. NBC News reports that many small businesses that cater to parks visitors are feeling the pain. Ironically, on the very day of the government shutdown Google honored Yosemite's 123rd birthday on its landing page. God bless America! |

Not pertaining to Texas directly, but there are a number of humorous photos here of tourists in DC circumventing the onerous barricades put up to keep them out of sites around the capital. Anarchy in DC! |

Has anyone visited Guadalupe Mt NP since the gov't. closure? What was the situation there? Did you try to hike anywhere in the park? I'm scheduled to hike there beginning Sunday (10/20), after hiking the Mt Davis Preserve on the open day of the 19th (this is a trip long planned) and I'm not inclined to cancel the trip, given the difficulty I have in arranging vacation time. I've hiked hundreds of miles in our national parks, without assistance from anyone, and to be quite frank, I'm intending to go in as planned. Thanks! Eddie
